A bomb has exploded outside a four-star hotel in the Pakistani city of Rawalpindi, killing at least 34 people and wounding 32 more, according to police.

“There was a blast on Mall Road in Rawalpindi,” police officer Mohammed Akhlaq said Monday.

The explosives may have been planted in a car in a parking lot, said police official Kashif Ayaz.

Following the blast, the United Nations said it was withdrawing its international staff from northwestern Pakistan because of the security situation.

Rawalpindi is just a few miles away from the capital city of Islamabad.

In recent weeks, militants have struck Pakistan several times, killing about 250 people in retaliation for an army offensive against militants in the northwest.

In one incident on Wednesday afternoon, an explosive laden car ripped through the crowded market in Peshawar, killing 105 people and injuring at least 200 others.
